In September 2013 I visited the Dolomites in Italy on my way back from a trip to the coast of Croatia. The region was experiencing one of its hottest summers ever recorded. The hottest occurring in 2003. Soaring temperatures and the continued melting of Alpine permafrost in the region has seen an increase the frequency and severity of rockfalls. Where you would expect to see year round snow at this altitude the mountain tops had little or no snow cover.
